Pioneering Process Solutions

Environmental regulations for the paper industry are getting tougher and tougher, the costs of raw materials and energy are rising, and at the same time industrial companies are being called upon increasingly to work as efficiently and as environment-friendly as possible. L & E supports this trend with its innovative process solutions. We plan and optimize the energy consumption of new and existing machines, thus improving the productivity, quality and runability of our customers’ production sites.

With our many years of experience in the industry, we offer comprehensive and leadingedge process solutions for entire ventilating systems, steam and condensation systems, and drying technology within the paper machine and reject & sludge drying after waste paper pulping.

Process Solutions for Saving Energy

With the L&E process solutions for saving energy, we can influence as much as 30 percent of the energy costs arising in the paper-making process by analyzing and improving the existing equipment for the drying sections of paper, cardboard and tissue machines. L&E delivers, assembles and services ventilating plants, steam and condensate systems for a comprehensive and money-saving energy concept. The resulting savings, mostly related to savings in primary energy costs, kick-in quickly and raise the efficiency of the production machine. The improved ventilation systems make it possible to create consistent production conditions and drying profiles for the paper web, often also improving the quality of the paper produced, besides reducing energy costs.

Areas of Potential for Improving the Energy Balance

  • Optimizing energy consumption in the drying section
  • An active and sustainable contribution to environmental protection with integrated heat recovery and noise protection systems
  • Active protection of the building structure
  • Improved climatic conditions for the staff
  • Complete system solutions for building new plants
  • Expansion and/or modernizing existing plants

Hood Energy Balance and Heat Recovery Systems

Paper Machine Hood

  • Custom tailored to perfectly fit each paper machine and each building
  • The high dew point, designed for up to 64°C (147°F) of the waste air, enables effective heat recovery
  • Low primary energy requirement through improvements in heat insulation designed especially to save energy
  • Low false-air levels, even at low airflow conditions

Heat Recovery

  • Effective air/air-heat recovery thanks to the virtually self-cleaning glass-pipe exchanger
  • Glass pipe with long service life and ease of cleaning
  • Optimized heat exchangers guarantee high thermal efficiency
  • Air/Water heat-exchange for heating white water and heating water
  • Building heated using exhaust heat from the paper machine

Drying Technology

The dryers are specially set up to dry paper, board, leaf, fiber tissue and tissue papers.

  • Systematically further developed for new plants or perfectly adapted to the relevant production conditions to improve quality and efficiency of existing plants
  • Ecologically and economically engineered
  • Patented CombiFoil blast pipes for short heating times, minimal downtimes and negligible losses of pressure
  • Specially designed blast pipes for a uniform and high heat-transfer factor
  • Internal and external arrangement of the heating and circulation units
  • TransAir-Dryer with no-contact web guidance, especially for floating webs, coated on one or both sides
  • ContacAir-Dryer with web guidance supported by guide rolls, especially for paper and board, coated on one side
  • AirTurn dryer with no-contact redirection and drying of paper, coated on one or both sides

Reject and Fiber Sludge Drying in Recycle Pulping Operations

  • Raise the dry content of rejects and sludge up to 90 percent
  • Robust and highly reliable construction
  • Short payback periods (often less than 1 year)
  • Active and sustainable environmental benefit by:
    • Using the waste heat from the paper production process (no primary heating required)
    • Reduced disposal transport costs by removing water from the waste rejects and sludge (tons of water removed per hour)
    • Raising the heat value for now dry rejects and sludge by removing the water making the dried material a viable fuel source

The drying is done at low temperatures. This enables waste heat from the production process, boiler flue gases, gasturbines, etc. to be used intelligently and effectively. The simple and dependable construction combined with waste-heat recovery drying keeps operating costs to a minimum.

Final processing is done by pressing the now dried material into bales or briquettes, or simply through compaction resulting inconsiderable further savings in disposal transport or increased uses for the dried sludge or rejects. The construction and mode of operation of the L&E Reject and Sludge drying system enables payback periods of less than one year to be attained.

The resource-saving use of waste heat and reduction of landfill disposal also have a positive effect on the environmental image and improve public acceptance to the paper mill owner as a 21st century “green technology” user.

Steam and Condensate systems

Steam and condensate systems tailored to the needs of the individual customers enables and ensures excellent product quality and high throughput during the drying process.

  • Efficient use of the entire steam-energy
  • Applicable for all paper weights and grades
  • High operating reliability and runability make short payback periods possible
  • Minimal service required
  • Cascade systems for an optimum heating curve and pressure sequence when drying
  • Thermocompressor systemsfor the individualized control of each drying group
  • Yankee systems with thermo-compressor for reducing the primary energy consumption

With our many years of international experience in the paper industry, we are ready to further design and implement your heat and energy concepts with a wide range of innovative solutions.

Energy Analysis Service

L&E is a partner to the paper industry, in developing and executing energy saving processes to continuously and sustainably improve resource efficiency, taking into account all applicable statutory and regional regulations. We make sure that the energy lost through waste air and water in the paper factory is made use of efficiently.

Technological progress makes the use of lowtemperature waste heat an important factor when optimizing energy consumption. For an efficient use of energy through the extended use of low-temperature waste heat, we put together a step-by-step concept together with the paper factory. The goal is to improve the level of efficiency by finding economical and realistic uses for this waste heat in the plant., We assist the customer from the analysis & design phase all the way to implementation of those concepts into the paper mill systems.

The first step in optimizing the energy balance is assessing the existing situation. This is the basis for the analysis of the heat and energy usage within the paper factory and the potential improvements that result from it.

Primary/Initial assessment » Examine the entire ventilation plant, air volumes with regard to the hood and hall climate, heating operation, cylinder temperatures, etc. and assessment for the extended use of all the low-temperature heat.

Analysis » Analyze and assess the energy efficiency and the production and quality requirements

Action plan » Develop a detailed action plan

Implementation » Implement the actions using L&E solutions
